Deluxe Explores New Frontiers with James Gray’s ‘Ad Astra’
‘Ad Astra’ follows Roy McBride (Brad Pitt) on a mission across our solar system to find the truth about his missing father, Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones) and his ill-fated expedition that might now be a threat to the universe. To deliver the visually striking space thriller to audiences, visionary director James Gray and acclaimed cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema, ASC, FSF, NSC, who shot the film primarily on 35mm in 2-perf format, turned to Deluxe to handle the bevy of post-production services needed, including dailies and final colour.
The film was primarily shot at locations around Los Angeles County that provided the foundation for depicted landscapes on Earth, the Moon, Mars, and Neptune. Dailies were handled locally and graded by EC3 Colorist Matt Wallach, who worked closely with Van Hoytema. Final colour was completed by London-based Senior Colourist, Greg Fisher of Company 3, working primarily out of EFILM in Hollywood.
