Vale Mark Downes

The staff of NOVA Entertainment have joined with the family and friends of Mark Downes in mourning the network’s Chief Technical Officer who passed away suddenly this week at his Sydney home.

Mark had held the position of CTO with NOVA since July, 2011, overseeing technical operations for the network’s seven commercial FM/DAB+ radio stations, one commercial AM/DAB+ radio station and two digital/DAB+ stations. These included the national Nova network, Smooth 95.3/91.5 stations in Sydney and Melbourne, Adelaide’s talk/sport radio station FIVEaa and StarFM on the NSW Central Coast. He was also responsible for digital radio stations Coles Radio, Smooth and the chill out music station Koffee.

Prior to NOVA, he held the position of CEO with Elaine Education, a privately owned business in the education and performing arts sectors where he built the business to over 100 locations.

However, his work at NOVA marked a return to a broadcasting career which included National Technology Manager with Austereo, and Chief Engineer with Sky Channel. The latter role saw him oversee implementation of station-wide digitisation and automation systems, and the commissioning of digital studios for Sky News. His association with Sky Channel began in 1995 when he joined as a Broadcast Engineer.

In a statement, NOVA Entertainment said, “We are sad to announce the passing of our dear colleague Chief Technology Officer, Mark Downes. Mark was a much loved and respected executive right across Nova Entertainment and indeed the broader industry.  Mark was a wonderful person and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

“We will miss his energy, his passion and his friendship. We send our thoughts and condolences to Mark’s family and friends during this time.”
