Sounds Amazing 2020: Celebrating Innovation in Audio – Day One

The BBC Academy returns for another Sounds Amazing event, in collaboration with BBC R&D, showcasing the most innovative and creative audio productions, and the latest exciting developments in audio technology.

Join your conference host – BBC Click’s LJ Rich – who will take you on a fascinating three-day journey online. We’ll hear from industry leaders about their amazing award-winning work on sound across TV, radio, podcasts, film, and gaming. Top commissioners from the BBC and beyond will give their views on the most exciting trends and their most innovative output. You will also learn about fantastic new technologies to enhance your production process and deliver more immersive and accessible audio to audiences.

Morning Conference Session: 11:00 – 12.00

Jonathan Wall, Controller of BBC Sounds, will open the event.

L.J. Rich, Technology presenter (BBC Click), sound designer, inventor, and NASA Datanaut will be your host.

Sonic Wonders: Inspirational talks from top award winners.

We’ll hear from Nina Harstone, the Oscar-winning sound editor of the film Bohemian Rhapsody, on how she recreated the electric atmosphere of the iconic 1985 Live Aid concert and seamlessly blended the voices of Freddie Mercury and Rami Malak.

The pioneering wildlife sound recordist Chris Watson will reflect on his work bringing us the sounds of the natural world, including the recording of authentic and evocative soundscapes for HBO’s TV docu-drama Chernobyl.

There will be a Q and A session at the end.

BBC Blue Room – A look at some of the most important new innovations in audio technology.

Afternoon Conference Session: 13:30 – 14:30

Game On: Learning from leading lights in game audio.

The afternoon session will give you expert insights from the games industry, where sound design and music must adapt to game action to deliver powerful storytelling to huge audiences.

Sam Hughes will discuss his sound design work on the AAA game Control, including the role of 3D sound to build intricate environments and elicit emotion.

Omar Khan will discuss his role creating non-linear soundscapes and music for the sci-fi thriller game Observation.

Tess Tyler will discuss her role as an award-winning composer for games, from indie hits to AAA LEGO® titles.

There will be a Q and A session at the end.
