Thailand Set Sights on Unused Spectrum for 5G Rollout

The telecom committee of Thailand’s communications regulator has approved a draft regulation covering the recall of unused spectrum to be auctioned for use in the roll-out of 5G. The board of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBTC) is aiming to introduce the regulation in December this year.

The NBTC is looking at the 2600MHz, 1500MHz and 2300MHz spectrum ranges.

The first range of spectrum to be subject to the new regulation will be the 2600MHz band. Incumbent spectrum holders will be compensated for return of the spectrum.

State-owned public broadcaster MCOT has 190MHz in the 2600MHz range. An arrangement which expires in 2022.
