Hybrid World Adelaide Announces Amie DD Game Programmer
In an exciting partnership between Hybrid World Adelaide (HWA) and MOD., US game programmer Amie D Dansby (Amie DD) is set to mark her first visit to Australia with a range of exclusive appearances at HWA and MOD. Joining her on the line-up this year at the Adelaide Convention Centre from 21-22 July is Steven ‘Bajo’ O’Donnell, who will return to deliver a specialist Twitch workshop after a hugely popular appearance last year.
Standing side by side at the convention centre, Hybrid World Adelaide and AVCon have formed an alliance to co-present an exclusive entertainment experience that will be announced in the weeks to come. The partnership will provide lovers of cosplay, gaming and esports the opportunity to ‘play now’ with AVCon’s unique array of interactive pop culture events and ‘play next’ at Hybrid World Adelaide’s free showcase of tech inspired activities.
Amie DD is co-founder of ATAT Tech, a robotics, augmented reality and video game development company based in Texas. Amie has worked across both PlayStation and Xbox, and has long been a strong advocate for diversity in the technology industry. Through the National Videogame Museum in Texas, she created a scholarship for girls wanting to focus on science, technology, electronics or mathematics (STEM) studies. Amie encourages others to experiment and learn by trying, making mistakes, and trying again. It’s a philosophy she lives by, saying, “There’s no such thing as failure, only learning experiences.”
Co-presented with Adelaide’s latest futuristic museum MOD. at the University of South Australia, Amie invites the public to a range of hands-on workshops for teenagers and adults, where together they will help create her next cosplay costume. The HWA/MOD. workshops will allow people to play, explore and discover electronics – and more – in a collaborative environment, with the final cosplay project presented at Hybrid World Adelaide and then displayed at MOD. at the conclusion of HWA.
Director of MOD., Dr. Kristin Alford, says she is excited to be joining with Hybrid World to bring Amie DD to Adelaide. “Amie is a real champion for women in STEM and the creative power of science more broadly,” Alford says.
“At MOD. we are all about experimentation, and exploring the what-ifs, so having a visit from Amie DD is exciting and hosting some of her workshops will be a delight.”
Amie’s cosplay costume will be one of the many free interactive events available at Hybrid World Adelaide giving adults and kids alike a chance to get hands-on with tech inspired activities. The public can expect everything from drone racing, to a robot combat tournament led by Adelaide’s own Adelaide Robot Combat League, and interactive augmented reality and robotic activities from STEMplay SA. Ignite VR and Untethered VR will provide free virtual reality experiences for visitors, and SA libraries will deliver a futuristic hands on program for all. Hybrid World Adelaide CEO Amanda Duthie said the Hybrid World public program is set to be a fantastic collection of technology discoveries for all ages.
Ms. Duthie said Hybrid World Adelaide is: “Thrilled to be collaborating with MOD. and AVCon to bring together what is truly the future of pop culture and entertainment and the evolution of how we as a society will experience ‘play’.”
“Whether you are a digital enthusiast or simply tech curious, we really want to encourage people of all backgrounds and interests to come and get hands on with the free and ticketed interactive events and activities that will be on offer at Hybrid World Adelaide this year.”
The HWA Public Program is part of the five-day tech event separated into three core areas. The start-up development fund incubation HWA LAB runs from 20th to the 21st of July at University of South Australia’s Innovation and Collaboration Centre, while the HWA Tech Conference runs from the 23rd to the 24th of July, both at the Adelaide Convention Centre.
The Tech Conference from 23 – 24 July, curated by returning Hybrid World Adelaide Creative Director and digital pioneer Robert Tercek, will see experts in artificial intelligence, robotics, augmented biology and space. This includes international business leader, award-winning speaker and author of ‘The Finnish Miracle’ André Noël Chaker, one of the world’s leading technologists and former South Australian Thinker in Residence Prof. Genevieve Bell; and Flinders University space archaeologist Dr. Alice Gorman, also known as ‘Dr. Space Junk’.
